The sleeve length is taken from the crown to the cuff on the coat. Allow for room between the coat and your shoulder when measuring, otherwise the length will seem generous. The Centre Back length is from the nape of your neck.

 

A long is about 2.5cm longer in the arm and body.  For those metrically challenged like me, that is about 1 inch.
